The Baltimore Ravens are 4-9 on the season, well out of contention in the postseason race. They have multiple big-name players like quarterback Joe Flacco and Steve Smith on injured reserve, and nobody knew ahead of time which of three quarterbacks -- Matt Schaub, Jimmy Clausen or Ryan Mallett -- would start Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Chiefs vs. Ravens 2015 live stream: Start time, TV schedule and how to watch online
The Ravens are well out of the playoff race, while the Chiefs are fighting for a wild card berth.
Kansas City, a team that lost five consecutive games after a Week 1 win over the Houston Texans -- a game in which Mallett saw playing time before he was released by Houston -- is faring quite a bit better than the Ravens this year. Despite that five-game losing skid, the Chiefs are 8-5 on the year and currently have the fifth seed in the AFC, grabbing a wild card spot with second place in their division.
The Denver Broncos haven't locked up the division entirely yet, but the Chiefs are more likely competing with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, both at 8-5 as well, and the trio of 6-7 teams on the outside looking in. The Chiefs currently hold the tiebreaker over the Jets and Steelers based on win percentage in conference games.
It also helps that the Chiefs launched a seven-game winning streak with a 23-13 win over the Steelers back in Week 7. They have been dominant at times, beating the Broncos, Steelers and Detroit Lions by solid margins over the course of their streak. But their last game was a narrow 10-3 win over the San Diego Chargers, a game that was surprisingly close for a Chiefs team that has looked so good in recent weeks.
Alex Smith threw his first interception since Week 3 against the Chargers, and finished 15-of-23 for 191 yards, a touchdown and the interception. Philip Rivers threw for 263 yards and an interception for the Chargers, though he came close to tying the game as time was near expiring. He led the Chargers on a 17-play, 78-yard drive that stalled on the Kansas City 11-yard line when time expired.
With Clausen starting at quarterback for an injured Schaub, the Ravens were dominated from start to finish by the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14. Russell Wilson threw five touchdowns and the Seahawks rushed for 123 yards as a team, while Clausen completed just 23 of 40 passes for 274 yards and an interception. The Ravens rushed for just 28 yards as a team.
Clausen has thrown five touchdowns and 12 interceptions since he was a second-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2010. He doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, but then again, if Schaub gets the start the Ravens wouldn't necessarily be better off. He's thrown a pick-six in his last three games, and if he does it again on Sunday then he'll tie his own NFL record for consecutive games with an interception returned for a touchdown.
The Ravens are simply not a good team without Joe Flacco under center, but the Chiefs have to keep their guard up given how their game went against the Chargers.
