The Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers both have plenty to fight for at this point in the season. With the postseason fast approaching, neither team has clinched a playoff spot, though both are on the right track.
Broncos vs. Steelers 2015 live stream: Start time, TV schedule and how to watch online
Both the Broncos and Steelers are eyeing postseason berths, and Sunday’s game holds plenty of importance.
Denver is in much better shape, currently occupying the third seed in the AFC thanks to a 10-3 record. They are tied with the Cincinnati Bengals, but Cincinnati has the tiebreaker for best win percentage in conference games. The New England Patriots have clinched their division -- the only team in the AFC to do so at this point in the season -- and currently hold the top seed and a first-round bye.
For a Broncos team that is dealing with injuries and uncertainty at the quarterback position, unseating the Bengals for the second seed and earning a first-round bye in the playoffs could be a huge. Denver has won games on the back of its strong defense all season, but Brock Osweiler hasn’t shown the ability to dominate a game with his arm and Peyton Manning has a foot injury that has limited him throughout the year.
The Steelers are 8-5 on the year, which is a good place to be as far as the Wild Card is concerned, but if the playoffs started today, they wouldn’t be in. The Bengals have the AFC North lead with a 10-3 record themselves, and the Steelers would need some luck to unseat them and potentially earn a top seed.
But both the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets also hold 8-5 records, and both hold a tiebreak over the Steelers based on win percentage in conference games. The Chiefs and Jets are currently seeded fifth and sixth in the conference, respectively.
It’s also important to consider the fact that the Bengals could be without Andy Dalton for the remainder of the regular season. AJ McCarron is set to start their next game, and while there are some easy games remaining, McCarron is a huge question mark. The Steelers could easily find themselves in a position where they are battling the Broncos for seeding, and a big head-to-head win over them would be massive.
Ben Roethlisberger just has to be able to contend with one of the league’s top defenses. The Broncos rank first in the league in yards allowed, with just 272.5 yards allowed per game, and first in points allowed, with just 17.3 points per game scored against them. The Steelers rank 11th in the latter category.
But on the offensive side of the ball, the Steelers have been very productive. They rank second in the league in total offense, behind only the Arizona Cardinals. When it comes to points scored, they rank fifth in the league, just behind the Bengals, at 26.5 points scored per game. It should be a pretty even matchup on Sunday.
The Steelers have some momentum, and an easy schedule after Sunday’s game against the Broncos. They are coming off two dominant wins, while the Broncos fell to the Oakland Raiders in their last game.
