Cowboys, Eagles among possible landing spots for Robert Griffin III in 2016

Robert Griffin III won’t be in Washington next year, but there are a few teams that could grab the former Heisman Trophy winner.

Robert Griffin III's time in Washington is all but through, but a few teams are expected to have interest in the former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year when he becomes a free agent. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans are among the potential suitors for Griffin.

“Of course [Washington] will release RGIII which is no surprise, they got no interest in trading him in the offseason, but there is expected to be some interest in him,” Rapoport said on NFL GameDay Morning on Sunday.

In addition to the Cowboys, Eagles and Texans, Rapoport also said that Sean Payton is a head coach that could be interested in Griffin, whether that's with the New Orleans Saints or a different organization. Payton could be on the trading block after the 2015 season or could even opt out of his contract with the team to pursue an opportunity with another franchise after another disappointing season with the Saints.

Griffin has been inactive for every game during the 2015 season and is third on the Washington depth chart behind Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy. Cousins has played well in the starting role, completing an NFL-best 69.2 percent of his passes with 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, and has convinced the team that he's worth a large extension to keep him in Washington, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

However, Griffin’s strong work ethic and attitude about being dropped on the depth chart have been positive, and Rapoport believes Washington will give him rave reviews to other teams during free agency.

The Cowboys and Texans are near the bottom of the NFL in points scored due mostly to struggles and injuries at the quarterback position. While the Eagles are No. 14 in points scored, Sam Bradford has just 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for the team and is No. 28 in the NFL in passer rating among starting quarterbacks.

Griffin earned a Pro Bowl nod in his rookie season after he was selected with the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. In 37 career games he has 40 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions, with another eight rushing touchdowns.
