Marshawn Lynch doing MMA training in hopes of regular season return

Lynch is doing MMA training to prepare for a potential return to the lineup for the Seahawks.

Marshawn Lynch is eyeing a return to the Seattle Seahawks before the end of the regular season, according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, who spoke with a trainer working with Lynch.

“Except for a few people inside the Seahawks organization, nobody has known where Marshawn has been until now,” Glazer said on FOX NFL Sunday. “It turns out that instead of going back and rehabbing with the Seahawks, he went to San Francisco and has been training with an MMA coach named Tareq Azim. I talked to him this morning and he said ‘More than anything we’re trying to get the fight back with Marshawn, he’s never gone through a surgery, so we’re working on the mental game with him.”

Lynch, 29, hasn’t played since Week 10 and had hernia surgery that was expected to keep him out for a month. On Wednesday, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said that there isn’t a timetable for Lynch, but that there is “a really good chance” that the veteran running back will be able to return.

The five-time Pro Bowler has done MMA training and worked with Azim in the past, and has spoken about the advantages that come with the alternative training.

Lynch was replaced in the lineup by Thomas Rawls, but the rookie suffered a broken ankle and is done for the season. Slated to take over the starting duties for Seattle is Bryce Brown, who hasn't taken a snap for the Seahawks in 2015.
