If the season ended today, both the New York Jets and New York Giants would just miss out on the playoffs. And they would only have themselves to blame.
NFL picks and predictions, Jets vs. Giants 2015: Gang Green slightly favored to beat crosstown rivals
This is a crucial games for two teams on the bubble of postseason contention.
After starting the season 4-1, the Jets have dropped four of their last six games. Perhaps the lowlight came in Week 8, when they failed to rebound after narrowly losing to the Patriots and dropped their ensuing contest to the Raiders by two touchdowns. It was a disappointing trip out west, and indicative of a club that doesn't possess resiliency.
But after nearly a month of losing, the Jets bounced back Sunday with a 38-20 win over the Dolphins. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw four touchdown passes, two of which were caught by Brandon Marshall. Marshall recorded nine receptions for 131 yards.
Given that the Giants have the worst pass defense in the league, the Jets will probably look to air it out Sunday. They’ve done that quite a bit this season, with Fitzpatrick attempting 30 passes or more in seven games.
Though Fitzpatrick has a strong throwing arm, he still struggles with decision-making even at this advanced stage of his career. He has thrown 11 interceptions in 11 games this fall.
But in order for the Giants to force turnovers, they’ll probably have to make Fitzpatrick uncomfortable, which is unlikely given the state of their pass rush. The Giants are last in the league in sacks.
The key to the game for the Jets may be the health of Darrelle Revis, who missed last week's contest with a concussion. If Revis is healthy, expect him to match up with Odell Beckham Jr., who's managed to get the upper hand against almost every cornerback he's faced throughout his young career.
Last week, Beckham laid out for a spectacular touchdown grab in the Giants' 20-14 loss to Washington. It was the lone highlight of the game for the Giants, who lost largely because Eli Manning threw three interceptions for the 20th time in his career.
Statistically speaking, the Giants have one of the best passing attacks in the league: They're ninth in passing yards, and Manning is on pace to finish with a quarterback rating north of 90 for the second consecutive season. And yet, their offense still commits more blunders than it should. To open up the season, for example, the Giants dropped one-possession games to the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons largely because of their failure to manage the clock.
Both Fitzpatrick and Manning have a proclivity for turning the ball over, and both defenses are tied for second in the league in takeaways with 22. This could be a high scoring affair that features plenty of mistakes on both sides.
Although CBS Sports’ panel is split evenly, seven of our eight experts at SB Nation think the Jets will walk away victorious. Only Joel Thorman is expecting the Giants to bounce back with a win.
