Seahawks cut Cary Williams less than a year after he signed an $18M contract

Williams was a healthy scratch for the Seahawks after Jeremy Lane returned from injury.

The Seattle Seahawks cut ties with cornerback Cary Williams on Monday, the team announced on Monday. Seattle had signed the former Eagles and Ravens cornerback last offseason to a three-year, $18 million contract to replace Byron Maxwell, who joined the Eagles in free agency.

Williams, 30, struggled to make an impact for the Seahawks and was a healthy scratch in Weeks 12 and 13 after Jeremy Lane made his return from the physically unable to perform list. In 10 games for the Seahawks, Williams recorded four passes defended and 46 tackles.

He is one of many big names from the 2015 free agency class who didn't pan out in their first year with a new team. While Ndamukong Suh eventually started to make an impact for the Miami Dolphins after a slow start, players like Maxwell, DeMarco Murray and Julius Thomas haven't done very much to help their new teams.

Williams will count $2.33 million against the Seahawks’ salary cap in 2016 and $1.17 million in 2017 even after his release. The Seahawks are No. 2 in the NFL in total yards allowed and No. 4 against the pass.
