Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Chris Matthews, who didn't have a single NFL catch before Sunday, has been the early star of the Super Bowl, catching three for 100 yards and a touchdown. If you're like most people in America right now, you're asking, "Who the heck is Chris Matthews?"
Who is Seahawks WR Chris Matthews?
Let’s get to know the guy that’s tearing up the Super Bowl.
Matthews entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Kentucky in 2011. He was originally signed by the Cleveland Browns, but was cut before the season (because the Browns cutting a future Super Bowl star is a very Browns-like thing to do). From there, Matthews found himself in the CFL, where he made an immediate impact for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was the league's rookie of the year in 2012, going for 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns.
Injuries cost him 13 games the following season, but his impressive 2012 was enough to get him a look from Seattle last offseason — he signed a two-year, $940,000 contract.
Matthews has size — at 6’5, 218 pounds, he’s the biggest wideout on the Seahawks roster — but failed to make an impact for most of the season. He came into Sunday listed as a third-stringer on the depth chart. After his out-of-nowhere Super Bowl heroics, that might be changing next season.
Some of his past employers wanted to point out they knew him back in the day:
.@nfl not to brag, but we totally know him.
