LaRon Landry released by Colts

The safety signed as a free agent with the Colts prior to the start of the 2013 season.

The Indianapolis Colts announced that they have released safety LaRon Landry, cutting ties with the eight-year veteran defensive back on Wednesday afternoon.

Landry signed a four-year, $24 million contract with the Colts in March 2013 as a free agent, and he carried a $5.75 million cap hit for the upcoming season. By releasing Landry outright, the Colts will get $2.25 million in cap savings. He received $14 million in guarantees and all of the guaranteed money has been paid out, according to ESPN’s Adam Kaplan.

The 30-year-old Landry played in 23 games (18 starts) for the Colts over the last two seasons. He was suspended for four games in 2014 for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, and finished this past regular season with 45 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He was more productive in 2013 with 87 tackles in 12 games, but did not record an interception or forced fumble in either of his two campaigns in Indianapolis.

Landry was originally drafted in the first round by Washington in 2007, and he played his first five seasons there before spending one year with the New York Jets in 2012.

The Colts also waived inside linebacker Andrew Jackson and tackle Xavier Nixon. Both Nixon and Jackson had their share of off-field issues recently. Nixon missed the team flight prior to the AFC title game, and Jackson was arrested for DUI in January.
