Super Bowl XLIX the most-watched program in U.S. TV history

The big game set a new television record.

The New England Patriots overcame the Seattle Seahawks in spectacular fashion Sunday night. Unsurprisingly, a lot of Americans tuned in to watch. The Super Bowl attracted 114.4 million viewers, making it the most-watched program in U.S. TV history, according to the Sports Business Journal.

The game pivoted on Malcolm Butler’s interception of Russell Wilson at the goal line with less than a minute remaining. The pick helped seal a 28-24 victory for Tom Brady and company, giving New England its fourth championship win since 2000.

This is the second year in a row that the Super Bowl set a new viewership record. Last year’s game produced an audience of 112.2 million, followed by Super Bowl XLVI (111.3 million), Super Bowl XLV (111.0 million) and Super Bowl XLVII (108.7 million). According to Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch, viewership peaked at 120.8 million from 9:45 to 10 p.m. ET during the game’s fourth quarter.

The record-setting audience also means that those who took the over on the total viewers prop bet were successful. The over/under was set at 113 million at most sportsbooks.
