Richard Sherman might not need Tommy John surgery

Pete Carroll said he “might have been misled” on the status of Sherman’s elbow.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Update 2/9: According to reports, after further evaluation Sherman will not need any surgery on his injured elbow.

*****

One day after saying that Richard Sherman would need Tommy John surgery on his injured elbow, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll backtracked from that statement.

He told 710 ESPN Seattle on Tuesday that Sherman might not need the surgery after all. Carroll did not give any further details about what other treatment or procedure Sherman might have to get in order to repair his injured elbow this offseason.

Carroll mentioned that he “might have been misled” when he said earlier that the All-Pro cornerback would require Tommy John surgery. Seattle’s head coach said Sherman instead may need a different procedure, but regardless Seattle expects its All-Pro cornerback to be healthy in time for training camp.

Sherman suffered the painful elbow injury in the second half of the NFC Championship game but remained in the game. He did not miss a practice leading up to the Super Bowl, and played every snap on Sunday night. Sherman had two tackles and was targeted three times in coverage in the loss to the New England Patriots, allowing two catches for six yards.
