The Kansas City Chiefs have released veteran wide receiver Dwayne Bowe after eight seasons, the team announced on Thursday. Bowe has spent his entire career in Kansas City after being selected in the first round of the 2007 draft. He signed a five-year, $56 million contract in 2013 that included a $15 million signing bonus.

The move will save the Chiefs $10.75 million in cap space, which will help the team in their contract with former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, whom they are expected to sign on Tuesday. Bowe struggled in 2014 with just 60 receptions for 754 yards and no touchdowns. He last made the Pro Bowl in 2010 when he found the end zone 15 times. Since then, he’s only scored 13 touchdowns over a five-season span.
Kansas City previously cut wide receivers Donnie Avery and A.J. Jenkins, so the team is still thin at a critical position for quarterback Alex Smith, despite the addition of Maclin. No wideout caught a touchdown pass in 2014, a staggering statistic that highlights the Chiefs' need for a playmaker.
The 30-year-old Bowe could still help a team elsewhere, but likely won’t command anything close to the salary he was due in 2015 before his release.
