New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola has agreed to restructure his contract, ensuring that he remains with the Super Bowl champions through at least next season. The new deal is for three years and is worth $12.75 million, with a maximum value of $15 million including incentives, per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.
Danny Amendola restructures contract with Patriots
The wide receiver will remain with the Super Bowl champs on a new three-year deal.
Amendola was scheduled to make $15 million over the final three seasons of his old deal, so this new contract essentially allows the Patriots to be more flexible with their cap spending in 2015 and gives Amendola a chance to earn his full salary back over the duration of the contract.
The veteran was a candidate to be cut by the team, since he was set to count $5.7 million against the Patriots’ salary cap this upcoming season, with $1 million increases for 2016 and 2017. If the Patriots had released Amendola, they would have gained $2.1 million in cap room for 2015.
Injuries have plagued Amendola throughout his career. He did play in all 16 games last season but had one of his least productive campaigns. He caught just 27 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown, averaging a career-worst 7.4 yards per reception. Amendola, 29, did emerge in the postseason as one of the team's key targets (137 receiving yards, three touchdowns), and the Patriots are now hoping he can be another reliable option at wideout for Tom Brady next season.
