The New Orleans Saints traded guard Ben Grubbs to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a fifth-round draft choice on Thursday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The move is yet another salary dump for the Saints, who are clearly trying to rid themselves of several bulky contracts in order to free up some cash and cap space so they can be active in the free agent market this winter. New Orleans has already traded Jimmy Graham, released Pierre Thomas and Curtis Lofton, and restructured several other contracts to get them under the cap and give them additional spending flexibility.
Grubbs, who carried a $9.6 million cap charge for 2015, was always considered a prime candidate to be a cap casualty this offseason. By trading the two-time Pro Bowler, the Saints will create $3.6 million in cap savings, per The Times Picayune’s Evan Woodbery. Although the team will also carry $6 million in dead money next season for him, they do gain an additional mid-round pick in return.
Grubbs, 31, spent the past three years in New Orleans, where he started all 16 games each season for the Saints. He had a solid year last season, allowing just one sack in 1,152 snaps, and was rated 35th out of 78 qualifying guards by Pro Football Focus.
