The Minnesota Vikings have released wide receiver Greg Jennings, the team announced Saturday. Jennings was with the Vikings for two seasons and was productive in that time, but struggled to live up to his contract. A second round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2006, Jennings led the Vikings with 742 yards and six touchdowns in 2014, but was not as effective as a No. 1 receiver as many hoped.

The Minnesota Vikings have released wide receiver Greg Jennings.

Jennings signed a five-year, $45 million contract with the Vikings and was due to have an $11 million cap hit in each of his next three seasons with the team. But Minnesota recently took on a sizable contract by trading for Miami Dolphins receiver Mike Wallace. While Wallace has also struggled in recent years, he would seem to have more left in the tank than Jennings at this point in their careers.
Jennings spent the first seven years of his career with the Packers, where he eclipsed 900 receiving yards five times. He never reached that mark with the Vikings, putting up 804 yards and four touchdowns in 2013. Minnesota spent a high draft pick on Teddy Bridgewater a season ago, and Jennings was a valuable target for him. However, the Vikings appear comfortable with moving ahead with Jarius Wright and Cordarrelle Patterson as primary targets.
Jennings joins a crowded class of starting-caliber receivers. With a better quarterback, Jennings could be given another chance to fulfill the No. 1 receiver role on another team, though he might fit best as a No. 2 guy for a team that is already relatively set at the position.
