Jameis Winston may not be at the NFL Draft in Chicago

Things could change, but the potential No. 1 pick in the draft might not be at Auditorium Theatre on April 30.

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

At least for now, Florida State quarterback and potential No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston doesn’t plan on attending the NFL Draft in Chicago.

That reports comes from Peter King of Sports Illustrated, who says Winston will spend the weekend with his family.

That means the first epic bear hug applied to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will have to wait until the No. 2 pick. That is, of course, if you believe that Winston will be the first pick in the draft. If he is, he would be the first No. 1 pick this century to not attend the draft.

This does pose the question about the last No. 1 pick to not be at the draft. It’s easy to find evidence online of every pick since running back Ki-Jana Carter in 1995 being at the draft. It’s hard to quickly find evidence that defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson was at the draft when the Cincinnati Bengals took him No. 1 in 1994. (If someone knows this bit of trivia, let us know.)

The most famous draft attendance dodger of recent memory is offensive tackle Joe Thomas. He skipped out on a trip to Radio City Music Hall in New York City to go fishing in 2007.

This year the draft is moving to the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. As of now, it doesn’t look like Winston will be there. Of course, he could change his mind between now and the start of the draft on April 30.
