Tony Romo restructures deal with Cowboys, according to report

A restructured deal for Tony Romo will reportedly clear $13 million in cap space for the Cowboys.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo restructured his contract and will save the team $13 million in cap room, according to Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports.

In the latest estimations from the NFL Players Association, the Cowboys had just over $2 million of available cap space. Romo was due to count $27.773 million against the cap in 2015 and more than $80 million over the subsequent four seasons. Details of the restructure have not yet been revealed, but they will presumably allow the team flexibility to make moves for the remainder of the 2015 offseason.

Romo, 34, signed a seven-year, $119.5 million deal with the team in March 2013 with $55 million guaranteed. Earlier in the offseason, Romo told the Dallas Morning News that former Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray asked the quarterback to take a paycut so that the team could afford to keep both players.

With Murray departing to join the Philadelphia Eagles, there has been speculation that the Cowboys could be interested in acquiring Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who is unhappy with his current team.

Romo has spent his entire career with the Cowboys after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent following the 2003 NFL Draft. He became the team’s starter in 2006 and has a career record of 75-48 with the team with 242 touchdowns, 110 interceptions and four Pro Bowls.
