2015 NFL mock draft: Mel Kiper, Todd McShay join forces for three rounds of strange picks in televised simulation

ESPN’s draft gurus rolled out yet another mock draft, but this time they did it on TV. It was a curious exercise.

Mel Kiper and Todd McShay unleashed yet another 2015 NFL mock draft to gum up your timeline. This one had a twist to it, too. ESPN's in-house draft experts did it on the air Thursday night, taking turns making the picks in a perfectly topical piece of filler. And so what did this latest experiment in pretend drafting yield? Let's take a look.

At the top of the mock draft, things looked much the same. They had Jameis Winston and his JaMarcus-esque smile going to the Buccaneers with the first pick. Kiper made the second pick, for the Titans, and he took Marcus Mariota. He even used the occasion to push back on the Zach Mettenberger talk, saying the former LSU quarterback and poor man's Tom Brady "can't match" Mariota's talent.

The fun started after that.

Surprise at No. 3

McShay made the pick for the Jaguars, just because those fans didn't suffer enough during the Gene Smith years. He picked Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper over Leonard Williams or Vic Beasley or Dante Fowler, Jr. The Jags could use a receiver, but picking Cooper over some of those other players with the third pick seems dubious, if not maybe a little dumb.

The fall of Vic

Speaking of Vic Beasley, one of the best pass rushers in the draft this year did not come off the board in Kiper and McShay's terrifying vision of the future. They had Leonard Williams to the Raiders and Fowler to Washington, picks that both make sense, but no Beasley.

Shane Ray comes off the board in the first round, 29th to the Colts. So does Randy Gregory, 13th to the Saints (Stephen White reiterated his concerns about Gregory on this week's podcast). Surely there's no way those two would be off the board before Vic Beasley.

This is where I’m contractually obliged to remind you about where Kiper had Jimmy Clausen ranked in 2010.

Running backs

You may not like their picks, but it's hard to disagree with the buddy cop comedy-like rapport between these two. Just a couple of clowns yukking it up! And we got to see one of those future Emmy-worthy exchanges after McShay mocked Georgia running back Todd Gurley to the Giants with the ninth pick.

Todd kills me for “breaking a Mel Kiper rule” and putting a running back in Round 1 of my Grade A, then he drafts Gurley at No. 9!? Who’s the hypocrite?

Kiper made that joke in the wake of the pick ... right before bludgeoning* his mock draft buddy with the draft board, which I felt was a little extreme.

(*Physical violence did not actually occur).

Wisconsin back Melvin Gordon also came off the board in the first round, at No. 24 to the Cardinals. That's a pretty solid pick, and it'd be a way better route for the Cardinals than trading away for Adrian Peterson.

Perriman slips

Kiper’s favorite receiver, Breshad Perriman, slipped down to the 14th pick, Miami, after being as high as No. 10 in a recent mock draft. Hell, at this point why don’t they just start mocking him to the Raiders; pretend Al Davis is making those picks via Ouija board.

Receivers dominated the first round of this joint exercise; a total of seven came off the board. That included a first-round appearance by Phillip Dorsett of The U (16th to Houston) and Devin Smith of THE Ohio State (31st to New Orleans).

Second round

Because it’s April and NFL coverage dominates everything and maybe also because ESPN doesn’t have a contract to show NBA playoff games during the week, Kiper and McShay added a second round of laughs and drafting. Some notes from the second round:

  • Vic Beasley goes to the Jags with the 36th pick.
  • Three of the first six picks in the second round here were offensive tackles.
  • Alabama's Landon Collins is not the first safety off the board. That honor goes to Eric Rowe of Utah, who they put in the first round at No. 32 to the Patriots. Collins goes in the second round to the Giants.
  • Colorado State QB Garrett Grayson gets the honor of being the third quarterback off the board in Kiper and McShay's dystopian vision. The Bills grab him at No. 50.
  • The next two quarterbacks to get picked don't have their names called, hypothetically of course, until the third round (yes, they did a third round). Bryce Petty is the 78th pick, New Orleans, and Brett Hundley doesn't go until 98th, to Kansas City ... a team that already has two pretty decent backups, Aaron Murray and Chase Daniel.

You can check out the whole thing here, or just wait for people to start complaining about the picks on the internet.
