NFL Draft results 2015: Devin Smith goes to Jets at No. 37

Smith is a true deep threat, giving the Jets’ offense a much-needed downfield weapon.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Jets have selected Ohio State Buckeyes receiver Devin Smith with the No. 37 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Smith is coming off a phenomenal season in which he helped lead the Buckeyes to an improbable national championship, beating the Oregon Ducks.

Smith lacks great size at 6'0 and 196 pounds, but he is an elite burner. One of the best deep threats in college football last year, Smith was devastating in the postseason, catching three touchdowns in a Big Ten championship game rout of the Wisconsin Badgers before notching another score in the national semis against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Smith was named honorable mention for the All-Big Ten team both last year and in 2013. At the NFL Combine in February, Smith showcased his speed with a 4.42 40-yard dash time before running a 4.15 20-yard shuttle. Smith is the type of receiver who will remind many of Torrey Smith of the San Francisco 49ers, with smooth speed and long strides.

The main knock on Smith is whether he can run the entire route tree, and his lack of natural catching ability. Smith can occasionally have to pull the ball into his body without catching it with his hand first. Also, at Ohio State, Smith was used primarily to stretch the defense on nine routes. If he gets the proper coaching, Smith should be able to develop those traits.
