NFL Draft picks 2015: Landon Collins taken by Giants after trade

Collins is projected to be the only impact safety in the draft, a star coming out of the Alabama juggernaut.

Crystal LoGiudice-USA TODAY Sports

With the 33rd overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the New York Giants have selected Alabama Crimson Tide safety Landon Collins. The Giants made a trade with the Titans to take Collins, who is easily the top-rated safety in the draft and has been said to be the only player worth taking before the third round at the position.

Collins has starred at Alabama for the past three years, playing in 41 games. Following in the footsteps of Mark Barron and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix with the Crimson Tide, Collins became a national name in 2014 by making the first-team All-American roster. Collins was also a finalist for multiple awards including the Nagurski, Jim Thorpe and Lott IMPACT Trophy.

Perhaps the strongest part of Collins’ game is his versatility. Collins can play either strong or free safety and provides his new team with a player who can hit in the box and cover a tight end. Collins projects to be similar to Eric Weddle, who has earned All-Pro honors with the San Diego Chargers.

At the NFL Combine, Collins showed why he is a top-tier talent. The Crimson Tide star ran the best 40-yard dash of any safety at 4.53 seconds before showing off solid explosiveness with a 4.33 20-yard shuttle drill.
