Bruce Irvin blew up on Twitter after Seahawks didn’t pick up his 5th-year option

The Seahawks decided not the pick up the fifth-year option of Bruce Irvin and he vented on Twitter about it.

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks decided not to pick up the fifth-year option on the rookie contract of linebacker Bruce Irvin, which means that he is now set to become a free agent during the 2016 offseason.

That news didn't sit too well with Irvin, who took to Twitter to air his frustrations. Irvin has never been one to pull punches on Twitter and spent the weekend of the NFL Draft calling out experts like ESPN's Mel Kiper.

While he didn’t censor himself in his tweets about the player option that wasn’t exercised, the tweets didn’t exactly call out the Seahawks either:

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll told reporters on Saturday that he “expects” Irvin to be with the team for a long time, despite the impending contract negotiations. However, the majority of the first-round picks from the 2012 NFL Draft received one more year on their contracts prior to the Sunday deadline to exercise a fifth-year option.

The fifth-year option was exercised for 20 of the 32 first-rounders in 2012, including stars like Andrew Luck and disappointing players like Dre Kirkpatrick. Other players like Irvin who didn't receive an extra year included Morris Claiborne and Shea McClellin.

In three seasons with the Seahawks, Irvin has 16.5 career sacks with three forced fumbles and three interceptions.
