Saints OLB Junior Galette won’t need surgery to recover from pectoral injury

Galette could be ready for the season opener after leading the Saints in sacks a year ago.

The New Orleans Saints may not miss Junior Galette for long. The outside linebacker will not need surgery to recover from a pectoral injury he suffered during offseason training, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. According to a source, Galette was told by Dr. James Andrews that he could be ready for the season opener with rest and rehabilitation.

Galette reportedly hurt his pectoral muscle while lifting weights. He participated in OTAs in late May, but was forced to watch practices from the sidelines after the injury. Free agent acquisition Anthony Spencer took first-team reps in Galette's place.

The 27-year-old is in the second year of a four-year, $41.5 million contract extension he signed last season. In 2014, he led the team in sacks (10) and forced fumbles (three), while adding 45 tackles. Despite the Saints' struggles on the defensive side -- they finished the season ranked 31st in the league in total defense -- Galette formed a formidable pass-rushing duo with defensive end Cameron Jordan, who recently signed a five-year extension with the team.

Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010, Galette has spent his entire career in New Orleans. In 64 games, he’s recorded 128 tackles, 31.5 sacks and five forced fumbles.
