The Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns are working out this week in upstate New York before playing each other on Thursday. On the first day of workouts Monday, Buffalo’s wide receivers were dominating the Cleveland defensive backs for most of the practice session.
Browns CB Justin Gilbert embarrassed in practice with Bills, Rex Ryan takes blame for fight
In other news from around training camp Monday, the Chiefs are down a couple of starting tackles and the Seahawks could be looking for QB help.

The problem was they just couldn’t stay on the field. With the temperature pushing 90, two Bills receivers had to leave the workout due to heat exhaustion, including Marquise Goodwin, who collapsed on the sidelines before walking off under his own power, per ESPN’s Mike Rodak. Head coach Rex Ryan said he expects Goodwin to be back on Tuesday. A third receiver, Sammy Watkins, left with glute soreness, while Marcus Thigpen was working as a running back because of all of Buffalo’s injuries at that spot.
That left the Bills with only four healthy receivers, which was good news for Browns cornerback Justin Gilbert, who was having a no-good, very bad day.
My unofficial tally of #Browns CB Justin Gilbert's practice from hell: Allowed 11 catches (4 in 1-on-1 drills, 1 in 7-on-7, six in 11-on-11)
— Nate Ulrich (@NateUlrichABJ) August 17, 2015 Cleveland’s other starting corner, Tramon Williams, said he thinks Gilbert will get straightened out.
“It is just about coming in and believing and competing, pay attention to details,” he said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Once you get through that, you will find yourself doing some good things. He is in good position a lot of the times. He just has to figure out what it is and he will be better.”
In other news, Bills LB Ty Powell was carted off the field with a knee injury during practice and Ryan isn't optimistic. Ryan fears Powell tore his right ACL, which would cost him the entire 2015 season.
The 27-year-old had been Buffalo’s top reserve at linebacker, so the injury leaves rookies A.J. Tarpley and Tony Steward as Ryan’s only healthy backups. Expect to see Buffalo searching the waiver wires for veteran help at the position.
Seahawks looking at quarterbacks
Seattle coach Pete Carroll said his team is looking for a backup quarterback now that Tarvaris Jackson’s injury is worse than expected:
Pete Carroll said Tarvaris Jackson has a high ankle sprain. They're looking at QBs. B.J. Daniels will serve as 3rd QB this week.
— Curtis Crabtree (@Curtis_Crabtree) August 17, 2015 When Jackson sustained the injury Friday against Denver, the Seahawks hoped that he would return in time for the regular season, but that’s not likely with the high-ankle injury.
The Seahawks now only have R.J. Archer behind Russell Wilson, and Archer is considered a long way from being ready to play in the regular season. For the moment, the Seahawks will move B.J. Daniels back behind center as the third quarterback. Daniels had been on Seattle’s practice squad as a quarterback for the past two years before moving to wide receiver this season.
Carroll also said there is a “realistic” chance that Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas will return in time for Seattle’s Sept. 13 regular season opener against the Rams. Thomas has not taken part in camp after offseason shoulder surgery.
Chiefs now missing both offensive tackles
Two days after the Chiefs lost starting RT Jeff Allen to an MCL sprain in their preseason opener, starting LT Eric Fisher limped off the field Monday with a sprained left ankle.
“It’s an ankle sprain, that’s what I’ve been told,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid told the media after practice. “They’ll X-ray it, MRI it and see what the deal is.”’
The tests should show if Fisher sustained a high ankle sprain or one closer to the foot. A high ankle sprain would likely sideline Fisher into the regular season, but with the Chiefs trying to find chemistry in a rebuilt offensive line, any practice time missed by Fisher and Allen will be problematic.
“We’re looking at combinations,” Reid said. “We’re going to find the five we feel play best together and work from there. We’re going to keep moving and shuffling if we need to until we feel we got it.”
Allen didn’t practice Monday, with Reid saying he was day-to-day.
Bucs promote Kwon Alexander
It hasn’t taken fourth-round pick Kwon Alexander long to impress his new coaches in Tampa. Alexander was drafted out of LSU to compete for a job at strongside linebacker, but according to BucsNation, he’s won the middle linebacker job instead.
Alexander was strictly an outside linebacker at LSU, but ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas reported last week he was making a smooth transition to the middle.
He didn’t take long to make an impact at his new spot, knocking down a pass from fellow rookie Jameis Winston before Winston returned the favor moments later:

When two teams work out together, especially over a series of hot summer days, tempers nearly always fray. In order to prevent that, Ryan and Browns coach Mike Pettine addressed both teams before the practice to stress that fighting was not allowed.
Ryan, though, had a special reminder for a player with some recent problems:
Pett and Rex just addressed both teams. Rex called out new linebacker IK Enemkpali: no fighting pic.twitter.com/zNIVX5nJvj
— Kevin Jones (@Mr_KevinJones) August 17, 2015 Enemkpali was waived last week by the Jets after breaking Geno Smith’s jaw in a locker room fracas, then claimed by Ryan, his former head coach.
There was one minor skirmish when Bills LB Preston Brown hit Browns WR Marlon Moore, who was in a non-contact jersey because of a rib injury. Nothing, though, that would make our list of the best training camp brawls of 2015.
Ryan knows that his reputation means he’s going to get the blame for even the tiniest flareup:
Rex Ryan on the fight during practice: "I'll probably get blamed for it and I wasn't even on the field. I'm guilty."
