Robert Griffin III suffers concussion against Lions

Robert Griffin III took multiple hard hits and left Thursday’s game against the Lions with a stinger and a concussion.

Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III left Thursday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions after taking a big hit. He stayed down on the field for some time and was eventually taken to the locker room after slowly walking off the field with the assistance of trainers. Head coach Jay Gruden confirmed after the game that Griffin sustained a concussion, and offered no timeline on his return.

Griffin actually took multiple big hits, as Washington’s offensive line was completely unable to give him anything even remotely resembling a clean pocket. He had already been sacked three times leading up to the play in which he went down with the injury. All three were hard direct hits, and he got up slowly from every one of them.

On the play he was injured on, he fumbled the ball and went down to the ground to recover it. A pile ensued, and when it was all cleared away Griffin stayed down on the ground. We’ve got one of the angles of the play shown on the broadcast below:

Griffin is the team’s starting quarterback, getting one more chance to show the team he’s worth the draft picks they gave up to get him. The team exercised their fifth-year option on him for the 2016 season, and it’s worth noting that option is guaranteed for injury. Griffin completed just 2 of 5 passes for 8 yards, and was sacked three times for a loss of 16 yards when he went down with the injury.

Gruden did confirm after the game that Griffin will still be the starter when he comes back from the injury.
