Week 2 of the preseason is wrapped up as Tampa Bay’s rookie quarterback was impressive in limited playing time.
Jameis Winston out-duels Andy Dalton

Kim Klement-USA TODAY SportsThe Bengals’ offense was out of sync the entire night, gaining just 152 total yards to 356 for the Buccaneers. Dalton finished his night with 46 yards and two interceptions on just 6-of-13 passing. The Buccaneers out-gained the Bengals on the ground, 145 to 42.
Unfortunately we didn’t get to see Winston play much. His night ended early after a minor injury scare. What we did see was encouraging for the Buccaneers, though. On the opening possession of the game, he went 3-of-3 to lead the Bucs on an 80-yard touchdown drive that he capped with a 1-yard dive into the end zone.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers can find success with any receiver, but Nelson is his top target, seeing more than 150 passes thrown his way last season. Nelson caught 98 of those passes for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns. If the initial reports are correct and Nelson has sustained a torn ACL, he’ll miss the entirety of the regular season, which would be a huge hit to Green Bay’s offense.
Fortunately, the Packers aren’t devoid of talent at the position behind Nelson. While Nelson is definitely the top receiver on the team, Randall Cobb caught 91 of 126 passes thrown his way last season, putting up 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY SportsIf you ask the Eagles, oft-maligned Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs may have crossed the line in Philadelphia’s 40-17 win over Baltimore Saturday night. It was quarterback Sam Bradford’s first game since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery for a second time last year, and some Eagles players thought Suggs went too far when he struck Bradford’s knees while the quarterback was rolling out for a read option.
Peters went on to say he thinks Suggs -- who was hit with a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty after he roughed up Bradford -- should face disciplinary action.

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY SportsIt appears to be a make-or-break year for the Bengals, who have still yet to win a playoff game under Marvin Lewis. If Cincinnati doesn’t win a playoff game this year, Lewis, Dalton and other veteran members of the team could be cut loose.
Most of the Bengals’ core remains intact from previous years, so the preseason slate is likely viewed as nothing more than a tune-up. While Winston and the Buccaneers may be looking to prove something, the Bengals are probably hoping to just get out of August healthy.

There are few things in football that rival a lineman making non-lineman plays. So much so that the inaugural Piesman Trophy will be awarded this year.

Jarryd Hayne keeps doing fantastic things for the 49ers. Perhaps nobody in the NFL has made a bigger case to move from obscurity to a final 53 than the former Rugby League superstar who made a jump this offseason.
Last week he ran for a huge gain, this week he’s making over-the-shoulder punt return catches like they’re nothing.

If Pouncey has to miss any time, it would definitely have a negative impact on the Steelers. With Le’Veon Bell they’ve put a heavy focus on the running game and having a mauling offensive line. Pouncey is the best player on that line.

The Twin Cities are under a tornado watch as storms roll through the area. Fans at the Vikings’ preseason game were evacuated -- except for one man, who was born to have fun.
We can’t see this fan’s face, but we know they’re having the time of their life. It’s good to live it up with moments like this, so we can forget -- if just for a second, how monumentally stupid it is to run in the middle of a football field during a tornado watch.

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY SportsPetty played the rest of the game, and he had a much better showing than his debut. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown, and made multiple throws that had to give Jets fans some hope for the future. He’s probably not going to unseat a veteran like Fitzpatrick any time soon, but he definitely seems to be improving out there.
Hester comes so close to making it to the end zone, and passes up his main blocker before he can actually block anybody. That ultimately means he didn’t manage to score a touchdown on the play, but it was a pretty awesome run regardless. He had 18 returns for 240 yards and a touchdown last season. Hester has 14 career touchdowns and is looking in fine form heading into his 10th season in the NFL.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY SportsThe condition of the grass at Levi’s Stadium was a big story last season, and it has been throughout the offseason as well. San Francisco conducted just three of the eight scheduled practices at Levi’s Stadium due to the field being in such poor condition. The 49ers have never given the grass proper time to take root and get strong, and after a short time of practicing it comes up in clumps and poses a safety risk for players.
It’s a big deal because the 49ers have a lot of non-football events there, including a recent Taylor Swift concert. The team started installing a new field on Tuesday and plans to re-sod the stadium multiple times throughout the season. Dallas will inspect the surface prior to Sunday’s game between the two teams, and given that it’s a new field, it should hold up ... initially.

Gary A. The Atlanta Falcons visit a New York Jets team that looked lifeless last week, while the Kansas City Chiefs play host to Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY SportsDespite the disastrous start that ended with Griffin being attended to by trainers and helped off the field, Gruden told reporters that Griffin is still the team’s starter (via the Washington Post):
Gruden explained that he doesn’t want to overreact to the results of Thursday night considering the quality of the Detroit Lions defense. That’s a fair point after the Lions finished No. 2 in total defense in 2014 and racked up 42 sacks.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY SportsAgain, this is a strong performance, all things considered.
So it was a pretty close battle, all things considered. Taylor did a lot with a little and Manuel came through in the clutch. Neither player took the starting job on Thursday, and the Bills will likely look ahead to the ever-important third preseason game before making a decision.
Read Article >Griffin suffers concussion against Lions

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY SportsGriffin actually took multiple big hits, as Washington’s offensive line was completely unable to give him anything even remotely resembling a clean pocket. He had already been sacked three times leading up to the play in which he went down with the injury. All three were hard direct hits, and he got up slowly from every one of them.
On the play he was injured on, he fumbled the ball and went down to the ground to recover it. A pile ensued, and when it was all cleared away Griffin stayed down on the ground. We’ve got one of the angles of the play shown on the broadcast below:
Read Article >Washington QBs are doomed

The small-scale problem here is that Griffin probably shouldn’t have been playing at the time he was hurt. He had already played three series and was coming under intense pressure. Jay Gruden should’ve seen his QB getting wrecked over and over again and pulled him from the meaningless exhibition game to ensure he’d be healthy for games that matter.
The large-scale problem is that Washington’s offensive line appears to be so aggressively bad that whoever plays QB for this team is going to get blasted into oblivion. Leaving a QB in a preseason game always runs the risk of injury, because football players get injured. Leaving a QB in a preseason game behind Washington’s abysmal offensive line is guaranteeing that QB will get injured, because Washington’s offensive line is dangerously bad.

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY SportsNow that all 32 teams have one game in the books, it’s time to get ready for another slate of preseason matchups with Week 2 set to kick off on Thursday night. It’s a light schedule featuring just two games, but there’s no shortage of storylines to follow.
We should see some significant playing time from many of the starters now as they get ready for the start of the regular season, which is less than a month away. Games should be a little cleaner, as teams shake off the rust from daily training camp practices and get more reps under their belts.
