Maurkice Pouncey will require surgery on ankle

Pouncey looked like he rolled his ankle Sunday against the Packers and had to be carted to the locker room. He will require surgery.

Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey left the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Sunday with a left ankle injury. He did not return to the game. Head coach Mike Tomlin said in the postgame press conference that Pouncey would likely require surgery, but offered no further details on any kind of timetable for the center's recovery, as noted by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Pouncey went down awkwardly and was slow to get up. It looked like he had his ankle rolled up on by Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. Eventually, he was assisted by the trainers and walked off the field on his own power. He was limping, however, and then left the field on a cart.

The Steelers' depth chart lists Cody Wallace as his backup and he came into the game when Pouncey went down. Pouncey is one of the best centers in the league, going to the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons. He was also named a first-team All-Pro twice and made it on the second team the other two years.

If Pouncey has to miss any time, it would definitely have a negative impact on the Steelers. With Le’Veon Bell they’ve put a heavy focus on the running game and having a mauling offensive line. Pouncey is the best player on that line.
