Michael Vick signs with 1-year deal with Steelers

The veteran quarterback is headed to Pittsburgh after working out for the team.

The Pittsburgh Steelers added some depth at quarterback by signing free agent Michael Vick to a one-year deal, the team announced Tuesday. Pittsburgh also placed quarterback Bruce Gradkowski on the injured/reserve list after he suffered a hand injury trying to recover a fumble against Green Bay.

Ben Roethlisberger is the starter for the team, but with injuries already affecting the position group, they wasted no time signing a veteran quarterback. The Steelers' depth chart includes Landry Jones, who has earned more reps at quarterback this preseason, and he could compete with Vick for the No. 2 spot.

It's the third team in as many years for Vick, who started three games for the New York Jets in 2014 and six games for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013. Prior to that, Vick was the full-time starter for the Eagles for three seasons and the Atlanta Falcons for six seasons to begin his career.

Vick, 34, has struggled with injuries for much of his career, but particularly in recent seasons when he has had concussion, hamstring, rib, quadriceps and hand injuries. There was some thought that he wouldn’t be signed by a new team at all, though interest picked up following May 12, when free agent signings no longer counted towards the compensatory pick selection.

In 12 NFL seasons, Vick has managed to rack up 22,093 passing yards with 131 touchdowns and 87 interceptions, but he will forever be synonymous with his ability to make plays with his legs. With 6,010 career rushing yards and 36 touchdowns on the ground, Vick is the all-time leading rusher among quarterbacks.
