Jadeveon Clowney will miss the Texans’ third preseason game

Last year’s No. 1 overall pick will make his 2015 debut in Week 1 of the regular season.

Texans fans will likely have to wait for the start of the regular season to see Jadeveon Clowney on the field. Head coach Bill O'Brien said Monday that the outside linebacker and last year's No. 1 overall pick will not be playing this Sunday against the Saints, according to the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson.

Clowney, working his way back from microfracture surgery he underwent last December, sat out the team's first two preseason games as well. O'Brien did say that the Texans plan on increasing his workload this week. Clowney was on the physically unable to perform list when training camp began.

“We’ll do a little bit more with him in practice,” O’Brien said, via the Chronicle.

“I’ve been pleased with the way he has reacted and practiced with the plan that we’ve had for him so far. He’s eager to get out there. One of the good signs with him is that he’ll come up to us and say, ‘Can I do more? I’d like to be in that drill,’ because he sees the competition and he’d like to be in more, but we have to stick to the medical plan. I’m definitely pleased with how he’s approached it so far.”

Clowney appeared in just four games last season. He recorded a tackle in the Texans' season opener against Washington but had to leave the game in the second quarter after tearing the meniscus in his right knee. He underwent surgery to repair that injury on Sept. 8 and returned to the field on Oct. 26 against the Titans. But on Dec. 4, after playing in just three more games, Clowney was placed in injured reserve. He finished his rookie year with seven tackles in four games.
