Philip Rivers leaves game against the Seahawks with an apparent hand injury

Rivers seemed to jam his thumb after making contact with Seattle linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis late in the first half of the Chargers’ third preseason game Saturday night.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was removed from Saturday night's game against the Seahawks with an apparent injury to his throwing hand that he suffered just before the end of the first half.

Seattle linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis made contact with Rivers' throwing hand when the five-time Pro Bowler was dropping back to pass late in the second quarter. Rivers was able to get off the throw, but was withering in pain afterward. San Diego Union-Tribune's Michael Gehlken estimates Rivers' seemingly jammed finger could end his preseason.

Rivers told CBS’ Tracy Wolfson in the third quarter he’s “good,” and said he would still be playing if this were a regular season game.

Prior to getting removed from the contest, Rivers had gone 13-of-19 passing for 140 yards. The Seahawks are leading the Chargers 10-6 at the half.

San Diego inked Rivers to a four-year, $84 million extension with $65 million guaranteed earlier in August. The deal puts Rivers on par with the other highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, who all make an average of at least $20 million per season. Aaron Rodgers leads the pack with an annual salary of $22 million per year.

Rivers has a career completion percentage of 64.7 and has thrown for 36,655 yards, 252 touchdowns and 122 interceptions. He has been with the Chargers ever since he was traded from the Giants shortly after the 2004 Draft.
