Arian Foster to have surgery on injured groin Friday, per report

The Texans running back will undergo groin surgery and miss the start of the regular season.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Houston Texans running back Arian Foster will undergo groin surgery on Friday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Foster sustained the groin injury during training camp on Monday and was meeting with doctors on Wednesday.

This news means he Foster will likely miss the start of the regular season, at the very least. One of the options the Texans have is to place Foster on short-term injured reserve, which would allow the them to bring him back onto the active roster after Week 8, as noted by John McClain of The Houston Chronicle. That said, there’s no official timetable on Foster’s recovery at this point.

“He’s going to miss some time, there’s no doubt about that,” head coach Bill O’Brien said Wednesday after practice.

Foster sustained the injury on a pass play on Monday and left practice afterwards. Alfred Blue took over in Foster's place and will likely do so going forward. Houston has worked out multiple running backs, including Joe McKnight, Pierre Thomas and Malena.

Thomas reportedly almost joined the Texans after Wednesday’s tryout, but the two sides couldn’t agree to terms and it now looks like there are no plans for him to join the team. Blue started three games as a rookie in 2014 and put up 528 yards and two touchdowns. The Texans may not wind up signing anybody, as they like the running backs on their roster, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Foster started 13 games and looked like his old self last season, rushing for 1,246 yards and eight touchdowns, with an average of 4.8 yards per carry. Foster has played a full 16 games just twice in his six-year career, missing three games in 2014 and eight games in 2013. He’s earned the “injury-prone” label in recent years, but his play last season was encouraging for the Texans. He missed two games with a groin injury in 2014.
