Bills defensive end IK Enemkpali is facing a four-game suspension for punching Geno Smith in early August and violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. Enemkpali, however, plans on appealing the suspension, per Rapoport.
IK Enemkpali reportedly facing a 4-game suspension for punching Geno Smith
The Bills defensive end, however, plans to appeal.
The incident occurred in the locker room of the Jets training facility on Aug. 11 and was reportedly over $600 that Enemkpali believed Smith owed him. The blow fractured Smith's jaw -- he'll be out for at least six weeks -- and Enemkpali was immediately released. A day later he was claimed by the Bills, where he was reunited with former Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who drafted Enemkpali in 2014. The Bills cut Enemkpali after the preseason and later signed him to their practice squad.
On Friday, the Bills elevated Enemkpali back to the 53-man roster so another team cannot take him off their practice squad while he’s serving a suspension, according to Rapoport.
Under New Jersey statutes Smith could press charges against Enemkpali (as outlined in detail here). Smith, however, told reporters last week that he doesn’t plan on doing so. Smith also refused to answer whether he has paid back Enemkpali the $600.
Enemkpali, who played four seasons at Louisiana Tech, appeared in just six games last season. He recorded two tackles and defended two passes.
