Raiders sign former 49ers OLB Aldon Smith

Smith, 25, was released in August by the 49ers after he was arrested for driving under the influence, committing a hit and run and vandalism. While he maintained that it wasn’t a DUI and that the “truth will come out,” the arrest was the last in a series of off-field troubles for Smith, including a 2013 incident when he was in a single-vehicle accident and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.

The Santa Clara County district attorney filed three misdemeanor charges against Smith over the incident on Friday afternoon. Despite that, Smith’s deal is worth up to $8 million, with $1 million in base salaries, $5 million in roster bonuses and $2 million in sack incentives, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

“Aldon is an extremely talented young player,” head coach Jack Del Rio said, via the team’s release, “We welcome him to the Raiders family and expect him to bring his best every day and be a great teammate.”

In 50 games and 30 starts over four seasons with the 49ers, Smith tallied 44 sacks, including 19.5 sacks in 2012 that earned him Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.

No punishment from the league has been handed down for his most recent arrest, but he served a nine-game suspension in 2014 for his 2013 arrest, with four games for violation of the substance abuse policy and five for violation of the personal conduct policy.
