NFL Week 1 injury report: Alshon Jeffery, LeSean McCoy expected to play Sunday

Get caught up on last-minute injury news before the games get started.

It’s the first Sunday morning of the 2015 NFL season. Fantasy football owners across the country are getting ready to unveil their 2015 squads in full force. Throughout the season, SB Nation medical expert Dr. Ali Mohamadi will provide his insights on the most notable injuries in the fantasy landscape and how they might affect your roster decisions on game day.

Here are some key injuries and their impact for Week 1:

If the Buffalo Bills plan to be a serious contender in the AFC East this season, they'll need a healthy LeSean McCoy. He returned to practice this week after suffering a left hamstring injury in mid-August. The good news for Buffalo is that it appears all systems are go for McCoy as the Bills host Indianapolis.

The less positive news is that hamstring injuries are prone to aggravation, especially if not 100 percent healed when re-tested. McCoy’s hamstring will be cause for anxiety for Buffalo fans and fantasy owners across the country for the first several weeks of the season. Backups Karlos Williams and Anthony Dixon would likely split carries if McCoy suffers a setback.

After losing Jordy Nelson to a knee injury, the last thing the Packers need is another hit to its receiving corps. Randall Cobb being listed as probable for Sunday's game at Chicago after separating the AC joint of his shoulder in the preseason, a relief for Green Bay fans. A shoulder separation is a type of sprain that involves tearing of the ligaments holding the joint in place, with higher degrees of tearing causing more significant instability. While Cobb's injury is a low-level sprain, his effectiveness will depend on how he handles the pain associated with hits to it, and while unlikely, there is always the risk of aggravating the injury and further tearing the ligaments that hold the shoulder joint in place.

In the same matchup, but on the other side of the field, another WR will be in the injury spotlight: the Bears' Alshon Jeffery. He is listed as questionable because of a calf injury sustained in August. After missing significant time, Jeffery returned to practice this week, albeit on a limited basis, and his status will be a game-time decision, though he is expected to play. The loss of Jeffery would be a huge blow to Chicago's passing attack, which has already lost prized rookie Kevin White to leg surgery and may be without veteran Eddie Royal because of a lingering hip injury.

Joining the parade of receivers listed as questionable, Tampa Bay's Mike Evans also will be a game-time decision because of a hamstring strain he suffered in Week 2 of the preseason. Evans did return to practice this Friday, although it is unclear to what degree he actually tested the hamstring during that session. Keep an eye on the Bucs' inactives closely before the matchup with Tennessee. It appears a decision on Evans will come down to how he holds up in pregame warmups. If he is unable to suit up, Evans' counterpart at starting WR, Vincent Jackson, would likely be the beneficiary of more targets in Jameis Winston's first game at QB.

Arizona WR Michael Floyd suffered a gruesome dislocation of three three fingers on his left hand during the preseason, which required surgery and didn't allow him to return to practice until just this week. Floyd has stated he would prefer not to wear a protective glove when he is ready for game action, which may complicate the timing of his return. He is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's contest with the Saints, but reports this week out of Cardinals' camp indicate that he has looked good in limited practice time. Floyd's absence would only increase the value of fantasy breakout candidate John Brown at WR for Arizona.

The Eagles have an extra day to assess the status of TE Zach Ertz, with the team playing on the road against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night. Ertz had surgery for a sports hernia in mid-August, with a target goal of Week 1 for his return to action. Ertz did practice this week on a limited basis, and he is just at the early end of the typical 4-6 week timetable for a recovery from this type of surgery. That said, even if he does return tomorrow night, it remains to be seen how effective he will be in the early going this season. Brent Celek would get the majority of snaps at TE for Philadelphia if Ertz is unable to play.
