The Oakland Raiders have been doing all the right things over the past couple offseasons. They've purged bad contracts from the books, drafted smart with guys like Derek Carr, Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper this offseason and seem to be on the right track. That did not translate to the football field in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Baltimore Ravens are hoping that's a trend heading into their game on Sunday.
NFL picks and predictions, Ravens vs. Raiders 2015: Experts almost unanimous in picking Baltimore
The Ravens didn’t have a strong showing in Week 1, but few experts want to go with the Raiders to beat them on Sunday.
Speaking of trends, Baltimore is definitely hoping their offense gets things together and the slow, lacking play in their opener won't continue into Week 2. Joe Flacco completed just 18 of 32 passes for 117 yards with no touchdowns and a pair of interceptions, while Justin Forsett only put up 43 yards on 14 carries. Their leading receiver was Marlon Brown, who caught two passes for 25 yards.
The perception is that the Ravens don't have many playmakers on the offensive side of the ball and it's hard to argue with those numbers. That said, the Raiders don't boast the strongest defense in the league and it's likely Baltimore sees this as an opportunity to get in a groove on the offensive side of the ball. Things will be a bit lacking on the other side though, as the team lost Terrell Suggs to an Achilles tear in Week 1.
On offense, the Raiders will be hoping Carr is healthy after he injured his hand trying to stiff-arm Adam Jones during an 8-yard run in the opener against Cincinnati. It wasn't a smart move for Carr, a guy the Raiders hope develops into a franchise quarterback, helped along with the addition of Cooper and free agent Michael Crabtree. If Carr is available, that saves them from having to go with Matt McGloin at quarterback.
Still, you'd be hard-pressed to find a good amount of experts picking Oakland to win Sunday's game. All six of the experts picking for CBS Sports went with the Ravens, but there was someone dissenting over at ESPN -- 12 of the 13 experts picked Baltimore, with Keyshawn Johnson picking the Silver and Black to eke out a win.
SB Nation’s panel of experts was unanimous in picking the Ravens -- not even PFT Commenter dissented on this one. OddsShark also came out picking Baltimore, making it totally unanimous.
