Geno Smith back at practice, says he won’t press charges against IK Enemkpali

Smith spoke to the media after participating in some throwing drills and addressed the incident that ended his preseason prematurely and resulted in the release of Enemkpali.

While he hinted that the league’s ongoing investigation of the incident could reveal new details, he said that he doesn’t plan to file charges against Enemkpali for the punch that broke his jaw. As for the $600 he reportedly owed Enemkpali that led to the punch...

Enemkpali was released following the punch, but was claimed off waivers by the Bills one day later. He didn’t make the final roster, though, and was released on Friday, eventually signing with Buffalo’s practice squad.

For the most part, Smith wanted to stay away from questions about the incident with Enemkpali and told reporters that there’s “a lesson learned in every situation ... Good or bad.“

The initial prognosis was that the injury could take 6-10 weeks for Smith to recover from, and that’s still expected to be the case despite his return to practice. Head coach Todd Bowles told reporters that he still expects Smith to miss four weeks and that Bryce Petty will serve as the team’s backup quarterback during that time.

At the time of the punch, Smith was atop the depth chart for the Jets, but has since been replaced by veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick. Bowles hasn’t said much about what the depth chart will look like once Smith is healthy enough to fully return to action, but as long as Fitzpatrick plays well for the team early in the year, the job could remain his even when Smith is ready to go.
