Just three days after releasing him, the Buffalo Bills have announced that they have re-signed veteran quarterback Matt Cassel. He'll serve as starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor's backup, while 2014 first-rounder EJ Manuel will be the team's third-string quarterback, according to the team.
Bills re-sign Matt Cassel as No. 2 quarterback
Buffalo gets its veteran QB back for less money.

Before being released last week, Cassel was scheduled to earn $4.15 million this season. With his new contract, Cassel can still earn $4.15 million, but he’d have to reach that by hitting incentives, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Instead his base salary is now $2 million and as long as Taylor plays well enough to keep the starting job and stays healthy, Cassel will have limited opportunities to reach that extra $2.15 million.
Cassel played well during the preseason, completing 13 of 15 passes for 83 yards and no touchdowns or turnovers in two games.
Cassel, 33, is entering his 10th season in the league. He’s made 71 career starts, and is 33-38 with 96 touchdowns and 70 interceptions. He made the Pro Bowl in 2010 and has a career passer rating of 80.1. The Bills are his fourth NFL team.
He entered last season as the starter for the Minnesota Vikings, after signing a two-year, $10 million deal with them in the offseason, but broke his foot in Week 3 and lost the job to rookie Teddy Bridgewater.
Cassel was traded to the Bills in March in exchange for two undisclosed draft picks.
