Super Bowl history: Panthers are 1 of 13 teams without a Lombardi Trophy

The Panthers are 0-1 in Super Bowl history while the Broncos are 2-5.

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers will have a second chance at their first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.

Carolina hasn’t been to the Super Bowl since 2004. Jake Delhomme, Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad led an offense that came up just short when Adam Vinatieri kicked a game-winning field to give the New England Patriots a Lombardi Trophy for the second time in three years.

While the Panthers made it to the postseason four times in the next 11 seasons, Super Bowl 50 will be Carolina’s second ever Super Bowl appearance.

That’s not the case for the Denver Broncos, a franchise with seven previous Super Bowl appearances and two wins. Its eighth appearance will tie the record for the most with the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers.

The last win for the Broncos was 17 years ago in Super Bowl XXXIII when John Elway was still the team’s quarterback rather than an executive. With Peyton Manning leading the way, the Broncos made it to the Super Bowl two years ago, but were blown out by the Seattle Seahawks, 43-8.

The Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars are the only four teams to never appear in a Super Bowl, but another nine have made appearances without a win. The Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings each have four trips to the Super Bowl, but still don't have a ring to show for it.
