Seattle Seahawks fullback and special teams player Derrick Coleman could face steep penalties for his hit-and-run accident back in October. Bellevue police have recommended the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charge Coleman with felony hit-and-run and vehicular assault.

Coleman admitted to smoking “Spice” just ahead of the accident.

The police department released a redacted police report from the Oct. 2 incident, that included an admission by Coleman that he had smoked “Spice” just over a half hour before the accident. Further inspection of the car resulted in cops finding “a lighter, a glass spoon pipe with tarry residue, an opened bag of Synthetic Cannabinoid labeled ‘F’ed up’.”
The report also notes that Coleman continued to press the accelerator for several seconds following the initial collision, which was the reason the vehicle flipped, after it was pushed an additional 260 feet. Traffic cameras along Coleman’s route showed the NFL player driving outside his lane of travel and at erratic speeds -- he was even seen stopping at a green light.
After the collision, witnesses used the words, “delirious,” “aggravated,” and “incoherent” to describe Coleman as he sat in the drivers seat. Despite their best efforts to keep him at the scene, he ran off with no shoes, later to be found by police on the side of the road.
Coleman was initially suspended indefinitely by the Seahawks while the team gathered more information about his arrest, but the team reinstated him after its investigation. His agent released a statement indicating Coleman may have fallen asleep at the wheel, which may be some version of the truth.
