The 2016 NFL coaching rumors tracker: Titans the final team to fill vacancy

Being an NFL head coach means having about as little job security as possible and the coaching carousel of the 2016 offseason is already in full swing. During the 2015 offseason, seven NFL teams landed new head coaches and it didn’t instantly change the fortunes for many teams.

Todd Bowles had the most success turning around a franchise, taking the New York Jets from a 4-12 season in 2014 to a top contender during the 2015 season. Gary Kubiak managed to keep the Denver Broncos among the top AFC teams and Jack Del Rio found success early with the Oakland Raiders, even if the team wasn't able to challenge for a postseason berth.

New head coaches didn't fix much for the San Francisco 49ers or Buffalo Bills, though.

During the 2015 season, three coaches didn't make it through the year, with the Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans parting ways with Joe Philbin, Chip Kelly and Ken Whisenhunt, respectively. The hope for each, and for all the teams firing coaches on "Black Monday" is that a new man in charge can replicate the success of Bowles and take them from disappointments into contenders sooner rather than later.

Jan. 8: The Buccaneers announced upcoming interviews with Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin and Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.

Atlanta Falcons

Jan. 3: On FOX NFL Sunday, Jay Glazer said that Dan Quinn will remain the head coach of the Falcons and is campaigning to have general manager Thomas Dimitroff to stay with him.

Baltimore Ravens

Jan. 4: Eagles owner Jeff Lurie has a head coach wish list, according to Paul Domowitch of Philly.com, and it features Saints head coach Sean Payton and Ravens head coach John Harbaugh as the best case scenarios.

Buffalo Bills

Jan. 13: Former Baltimore Ravens safety signs a deal to be an assistant defensive backs coach, reuniting with Rex Ryan, his former coach in Baltimore.
Dec. 30: Bills owner Terry Pegula affirmed that Rex Ryan will be retained as the team’s head coach for the 2016 season.
Nov. 29: Bills running backs coach Anthony Lynn was listed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport as an assistant coach who was likely to be a top head coaching candidate in the offseason.

Carolina Panthers

Jan. 8: The Buccaneers announced upcoming interviews with Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin and Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.
Jan. 5: Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will interview with the Browns on Thursday, per Ian Rapoport.

Chicago Bears

Jan. 9: The hunt is over for the Dolphins. The team announced former Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase is the team’s new head coach.
Jan. 5: Adam Gase has interviews set up with the Browns, Eagles and Giants.
Jan. 4: Ex-Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt could be a name to “keep an eye on” for the Titans offensive coordinator gig if Adam Gase leaves, according to Dan Pompei.
Jan. 3: Offensive coordinator Adam Gase is expected to be a favorite for the Browns head coaching job if the team decides to fire Mike Pettine, according to Mary Kab Cabot of Cleveland.com and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Jan. 5: The Browns plan to interview Bengals OC Hue Jackson and Bengals DC Paul Guenther.
Jan. 3: 49ers general manager Trent Baalke likes Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson as a potential replacement for Jim Tomsula, according to Kyle McLorg of Bay Area Sports Guy.

Cleveland Browns

Jan. 13: Hue Jackson was named the next Browns coach.

Jan. 15: The Lions finally made a decision and elected to retain Jim Caldwell as head coach for the 2016 season.
Jan. 11: After a lot of waiting, it seems we could learn Jim Caldwell’s fate soon, as he will meet with team brass, including GM Bob Quinn, according to Ian Rapoport. Caldwell’s fate reportedly rests with Quinn.
Jan. 4: Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin will interview with the Dolphins on Tuesday after the team immediately called Detroit on Sunday night to request permission, according to the Miami Herald. He will interview with the Browns on Wednesday, according to Mary Kay Cabot.
Jan. 3: Jim Caldwell is likely to be retained as the head coach of the Lions in 2016 and has support of ownership, but his fate will ultimately be decided by whoever is hired as general manager, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Jan. 3: Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin is expected to be a candidate for the head coaching job of the Browns if Mike Pettine is fired, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Indianapolis Colts

Jan. 4: Chuck Pagano isn't going anywhere. In fact, he agreed to a four-year extension with the Colts, who are also bringing back general manager Ryan Grigson. The band is staying together.
Jan. 3: On FOX NFL Sunday, Jay Glazer said Chuck Pagano is as good as gone and was almost fired after the 2014 season but saved his job by leading the Colts to the AFC Championship. Glazer also said that Pagano had the lowest salary of any NFL head coach during the 2015 season.
Jan. 3: If the Colts move on from Chuck Pagano, the plan is to pursue Alabama head coach Nick Saban or Saints head coach Sean Payton before moving to other options, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Dec. 31: Mike Wells of ESPN reports Chuck Pagano will be fired by the Colts if the team doesn't make the playoffs.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Jan. 6: Jaguars offensive line coach Doug Marrone will interview with the Dolphins on Friday and the Giants on Saturday, according to Ian Rapoport.
Jan. 4: Jaguars offensive line coach Doug Marrone is set to interview with the Eagles, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. Marrone interviewed for the Eagles coaching job in 2013 before he was hired as the head coach of the Bills.
Jan. 3: Jaguars offensive line coach and assistant head coach Doug Marrone is expected to be a candidate for the Browns head coaching job if Mike Pettine is fired, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Dec. 29: Jaguars owner Shahid Khan confirmed that Gus Bradley will be the team’s head coach in 2016 despite a 12-35 career record with the team.

San Diego Chargers

Jan. 8: Not only was Mike McCoy retained, he was signed to a 1-year extension through 2017.
Jan. 4: Team president John Spanos announced that, despite a disappointing 4-12 finish, Mike McCoy will be retained as the Chargers’ head coach.
Jan. 2: Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Mike McCoy is expected to be retained as the head coach of the Chargers.
