The Houston Texans have some big problems despite being 3-2, with quarterback Brock Osweiler failing to live up to his big contract. They’ll try to hold their tenuous spot atop the AFC South when they host the 2-3 Indianapolis Colts on Sunday Night Football.

This game could determine which team is the frontrunner for the AFC South crown this season.
Looking for a long-term solution at quarterback, Houston signed Osweiler to a huge contract in the offseason, worth up to $72 million dollars. It was a risky gamble at the time and is looking like a full-blown disaster now. Osweiler hasn’t been worth the money so far, throwing for just six touchdowns to seven interceptions and completing only 58 percent of his passes. He had no prayer against the Minnesota Vikings’ defense last week, completing just 19 of 42 passes for 184 yards, one touchdown, and one interception as the Texans got manhandled in a 31-13 loss.
Of course, the Texans have other problems beyond Osweiler. They also signed Lamar Miller in free agency hoping to jumpstart their running game, but Miller has been a disappointment as well. Despite getting huge workloads (101 carries in five games) Miller has only 371 rushing yards, averaging an unimpressive 3.7 yards per carry. He has yet to find the end zone this season.
Will Fuller continues to make impressive plays as a rookie, but the receiver is still committing brutal drops. DeAndre Hopkins has straight up disappeared at times, recording just 22 catches in five games after having 111 the year before. The Texans’ offense is a big mess right now, and their defense isn’t the same without J.J. Watt. That first-place lead could rapidly get erased if they don’t turn things around soon.
As for the Colts, they’re having another disappointing season and head coach Chuck Pagano could find himself on the hot seat if they don’t improve. Andrew Luck is making a Herculean effort to keep his team in games and he had to play the hero once again last week, leading his team to a comeback win over the Chicago Bears in a game that shouldn’t have been as close as it was.
Luck is quietly having a great year, completing 63.9 percent of his passes (a career high so far) with 10 touchdowns, three interceptions, and 1,469 yards in five games. He’s regularly feeding the ball to T.Y. Hilton and Frank Gore keeps chugging along as an ageless wonder in the backfield. But those three can’t do it by themselves -- the defense is a sieve once again, ranking 30th in both yards and points allowed per game. Pagano and general manager Ryan Grigson have built an uninspired, misshapen roster that doesn’t look anywhere near ready to win now, and it’s a tragic waste of Luck’s considerable talent. Both Pagano and Grigson could be gone after the year if the Colts fail to make the playoffs again.
That said, the Colts will move back to .500 and jump the Texans for first place if they pull off the win here. The AFC South hasn’t been as good as we hoped before the season, with every team underachieving in their own way. An 8-8 finish might be all it takes to get a home playoff game, so the Texans and Colts should be motivated to get this critical tiebreaker win on primetime television.
