Randall Cobb & Ty Montgomery might be running backs for the Packers this week

Eddie Lacy, who’s dealing with an ankle injury, is the only active running back on their roster.

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers may turn to a couple of wide receivers to help them out at running back when they take on the Dallas Cowboys Sunday. James Starks is out with a knee injury and Eddie Lacy is hobbled with an ankle problem. Since no running back from the practice squad was promoted to the active roster, that means the Packers might be forced to get a little creative.

Enter Randall Cobb and Ty Montgomery, who are reportedly preparing to take some snaps at running back. Cobb, who was originally a quarterback at the University of Kentucky, has carried the ball 45 times in his NFL career and averages seven yards per attempt. He's been a dynamic weapon since his rookie season in 2011 and allows the Packers to give their opponents some different looks on offense. In fact, he's already run the ball five times this fall.

Montgomery, meanwhile, doesn't have a single catch this season and only two carries. He said this week he's preparing for the opportunity. "Honestly, I feel like we've always got to be ready," Montgomery said, via ESPN. "I know I'm giving you a generic answer, but we've always got to be ready because you never know what could happen."

Even though Lacy isn’t 100 percent, he’ll probably receive the bulk of the action at running back Sunday. He dropped weight this offseason and is currently averaging a career high 5.5 yards per carry. But when he needs a blow, the Packers will be forced to mix and match. Though it may not be pretty to watch, it should certainly be interesting.
