The NFL still has a penalty problem

Monday night’s crew got crazy with the flags. Some crews leave them in their pockets. It makes things confusing.

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals got caught in penalty vortex. There were 23 flags in Arizona’s win over New York, and that wasn’t the most penalized game this season. The NFL still has officiating issues.

Jerome Boger’s crew called that game, and he runs the penalty-happy crew in the NFL, averaging 20 flags per game. There’s a 70 percent difference between the crew calling the least penalties, Walt Coleman’s, which calls an average of 12 penalties per game. ESPN takes a closer look.

CARDINALS BACK ON TRACK? David Johnson leads the way for the Cardinals as they continue to round into form. Another prime-time game, another big game for Johnson. So wait, are the Cardinals good again? Night of the living DJs! David Johnson wasn't the only DJ for Arizona doing work on Monday night.

THE JETS ARE STILL BAD: The Jets have a lot of problems right now. It’s not just the quarterback situation either.

BURFICT IN MORE TROUBLE? NFL reviewing questionable hits made by Vontaze Burfict. One of the stories in the game was the dirty play of the Bengals linebacker, including his apparent low hit on Martellus Bennett and a stomp on LeGarrette Blount. Burfict was suspended the first three games of the season after ramming through a falling Antonio Brown in the playoffs last season. You can see where Burfict appears to stomp on Blount in the game.

SUSPEND HIM: If the NFL is serious about player safety, it should suspend Burfict again. After his latest shocking display of poor sportsmanship, there is little room in the NFL for the league’s most volatile player.

ADDING AN 8TH OFFICIAL: Richard Sherman should have been flagged for pass interference. This is why he wasn’t. Sherman has been begging the NFL to add an eighth official to games. If he’d gotten his wish, he’d have gotten a penalty on this now-infamous play.

MORE THAN A BAD CALL: Dan Quinn doesn’t think the Falcons lost because of a blown pass interference call. Turnovers and penalties were bigger factors in Atlanta’s loss to the Seahawks.

IT’S NOT FISHER’S FAULT: Jeff Fisher says Rams players “took it on themselves” to decide to bust through Lions’ victory formation. Fisher says his team acted among themselves. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but the coach should have a better grip on his players, but then again, discipline has never been a big part of Fisher’s coaching. His Rams are the third-most penalized team in the league so far this season.

NO FUN GIANTS: Odell Beckham Jr. had fun and the Giants are being party poopers about it. If OBJ wants to marry a kicking net, who are we to judge?

NO WAY THE NFC EAST STAYS GOOD: Jonez on Jonez: This IS your father’s NFC East. There’s no way we’re living in a world where 12-4 wins the NFC East. Welcome to Jonez on Jonez, Dragonfly Jonez’s weekly look at the NFL.

TRADE DEADLINE: Patriots trade deadline candidates from three teams that should give up on 2016. The trade deadline is Nov. 1, so here are three teams the Patriots should look towards as possible trade partners.
