Cam Newton will miss Carolina’s Monday Night Football matchup with Tampa Bay due to a concussion, the Panthers announced Saturday. The reigning NFL MVP was knocked out of Carolina’s week four showdown against Atlanta after absorbing a vicious hit at the goal line in a 48-33 defeat.
Cam Newton won’t play against Tampa Bay on Monday Night Football
The reigning NFL MVP has been ruled out for Week 5.

The Panthers will turn to backup Derek Anderson, who was solid in relief of Newton last Sunday. The former Pro Bowler completed 17 of his 23 passes for a pair of touchdowns, but his comeback effort eventually fell short after he threw a pair of interceptions in the game’s final 74 seconds. Joe Webb will be the team’s backup.
It will only be the third game Newton’s missed in his five-plus year career. A rib injury and a back injury (related to a car accident) cost the young passer a pair of games in 2014.
Carolina has struggled even with the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in the lineup. The Panthers are just 1-3 this season, though those three defeats have come against two undefeated teams (the Broncos and Vikings) and the league’s most explosive offense (the Falcons). Now, they’ll turn to veteran passer Anderson in hopes of turning their 2016 season around.
