The Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets are two teams seemingly headed in different directions this season. Pittsburgh is 3-1 and riding high off a Sunday Night Football demolition job, while the Jets are struggling to find some answers after another uninspiring loss.

Fresh off demolishing the Chiefs on Sunday night, the Steelers take on a Jets team trying to salvage its season.
The Steelers got Le’Veon Bell back from suspension last week and proceeded to boat race the Kansas City Chiefs on prime-time television. They jumped out to a 22-0 lead in the first quarter and led 29-0 at halftime. The game was already over by that point as Pittsburgh cruised to the 43-14 win. They made it look easy against a pretty good Chiefs defense, which has to be terrifying to the rest of the AFC contenders. The Steelers’ Week 3 blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles is already a distant memory.
Bell showed no signs of rust in his season debut, ripping off 178 total yards on 18 carries and five receptions. Ben Roethlisberger threw five touchdown passes, with two of them going to Antonio Brown. The defense, banged up by key injuries, was not asked to do too much here, since Kansas City’s ball-control offense is simply not equipped to play from behind. Alex Smith and company had no chance after the huge early deficit. With Bell back in the fold, the Steelers figure to make another substantial playoff run this season.
Things are not so rosy for the Jets, whose season is quickly slipping away. They fell to 1-3 after another listless performance, dropping a 27-17 home loss to the Seattle Seahawks that was way more one-sided than the score makes it look (New York got a fluky touchdown off a fumble recovery that looked like an incompletion at first glance).
Ryan Fitzpatrick’s magic appears to have run out. After the Week 3 six-pick meltdown, Fitzpatrick threw three more interceptions against the Seahawks, putting him at 10 on the year in just four games. What has to be concerning for Jets fans is that Fitzpatrick might still be their best option -- the coaching staff clearly doesn’t trust Geno Smith, while Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are long-term projects. There are no quick fixes at quarterback for this team.
However, the Jets’ problems extend beyond Fitzpatrick. Matt Forte appears to already be wearing down, managing just 92 rushing yards on 29 carries the past two games. Eric Decker is out indefinitely with a partially torn rotator cuff. The defense, supposedly the team’s biggest strength, is 26th in the league in passing yards allowed per game. They just gave up 309 passing yards to Russell Wilson, who is nursing injuries in both his ankle and knee.
After going 10-6 in his first season, head coach Todd Bowles has himself in a tough situation here. An aging roster that barely missed the playoffs in 2015 is now a year older, with key players like Darrelle Revis declining, and Fitzpatrick’s regression has been particularly rough. Things won’t be any easier going up against a Steelers team getting hot, and if the Jets don’t turn things around they’ll be out of the playoff chase much earlier than anticipated this year.
