In possession of a league-worst 0-9 record, the Cleveland Browns are still very much the Cleveland Browns. On Thursday, the Browns head to Baltimore in hopes of finally breaking into the win column with a victory over the 4-4 Ravens.

Can the Browns finally get in the win column Thursday night?

Unfortunately, history is not on Cleveland’s side in the matchup. The Ravens boast a 26-9 all-time series record against the Browns. Earlier this season, Baltimore went to Cleveland and defeated the Browns by a score of 25-20 behind quarterback Joe Flacco’s 302 yards passing and two touchdowns. Last season, however, the Browns took down the Ravens in a 33-30 on a Travis Coons game-winning field goal in overtime.
Allowing the second-most points per game in the league (30.3), the Browns should get a bit of a break defensively against a Ravens team averaging just 19.3 points per game. Flacco has had no trouble with Cleveland in the past, though. The Baltimore quarterback is 14-2 in his career against the Browns.
Steve Smith Sr., Baltimore’s fiery veteran receiver, needs just eight catches to reach 1,000 total receptions in his career. Corey Coleman, the stud rookie receiver for Cleveland, has described Smith Sr. as a “role model” and a “mentor.”
“He has done so much for the game. I respect him,” said Coleman. “We have to try our hardest and put in the work this week getting prepared for them and do a good job.”
Smith Sr. himself is impressed with Coleman, who had a 104 receiving yards and two touchdowns when the teams last met.
“At the end of the day, I like the dog in him,” said Smith Sr. “I just love the way he plays and some of the things I have heard by the way he handles himself at practice.”
Though Smith Sr. cannot be overlooked, Cleveland’s defense will have to watch out for the red-hot Mike Wallace. Last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the speedy Ravens receiver had 124 receiving yards and a touchdown. In Wallace’s last game against the Browns, he reeled in two touchdowns.
The Ravens’ defense has held somewhat strong so far this season, allowing a ninth-best 19.1 points per game. Linebacker Terrell Suggs, the Ravens’ all-time sack leader, has the most career sacks for any player against Cleveland with 16. Baltimore will look to slow down Cleveland quarterback Cody Kessler, who has four passing touchdowns and zero interceptions in his last four games.
Kessler ranks fifth in the NFL and leads all rookies with a 67.5 completion percentage. He’s also been sacked 14 times in six games, but at least the Browns have Joe Thomas, the only offensive lineman ever selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his first nine seasons in the league.
The Ravens are at the top of the AFC North, though they have so much more to lose than the Browns. Baltimore holds the tiebreaker over Pittsburgh, but both teams are just 4-4 and the fight for the division will likely go down to the wire. For the Browns, the season is already over, and a win would just provide a bit of relief.
