AFC West and NFC East continue to reign supreme in postseason races

Two divisions currently own half of the NFL’s postseason slots.

The NFC East continued its dominance of the entire NFC in Week 10. The AFC West did the same on other side and the pair of divisions currently hold six of the 12 playoff spots.

That was the case even before Week 10, but wins for the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Washington only solidified it.

However, the NFC East has the Eagles on the outside looking in even after knocking off the Atlanta Falcons.

The New England Patriots remain in the No. 1 spot in the AFC, but the Chiefs and Raiders have the same record. The Patriots currently own the tiebreaker: a better overall conference record.

Here are the full playoff standings after Week 10:

AFC

  1. New England Patriots (7-2)
  2. Kansas City Chiefs (7-2)
  3. Houston Texans (6-3)
  4. Baltimore Ravens (5-4)
  5. Oakland Raiders (7-2)
  6. Denver Broncos (7-3)

The Miami Dolphins climbed to 5-4 and the Tennessee Titans improved to 5-5 this week, but that’s just not enough in the AFC. Only in the weak AFC North is five wins enough to take first place.

With a loss on Monday Night Football, Cincinnati fell another game back in the AFC North, while Pittsburgh blew a chance to stay even with the Ravens. With all three teams floating around .500, the AFC North is currently the battle for the No. 4 seed, especially with the Texans earning back-to-back wins.

NFC

  1. Dallas Cowboys (8-1)
  2. Seattle Seahawks (6-2-1)
  3. Atlanta Falcons (6-4)
  4. Detroit Lions (5-4)
  5. New York Giants (6-3)
  6. Washington (5-3-1)

The Lions are a newcomer to the postseason field and got there without playing a game in Week 10. During their bye week both the Vikings and Packers lost, leaving Minnesota and Detroit tied for the NFC North lead. Thanks to a Week 9 win over the Vikings, the Lions own the tiebreaker and are now slated to host a playoff game.

Atlanta is also slated to host one, but slipped with a loss to the Eagles. A loss for the New Orleans Saints means the Falcons are still the only team in the NFC South with a winning record, so nobody is breathing down their neck yet, but the team needs to find wins after a Week 11 bye or else the race could suddenly get tight.
