Johnny Manziel reaches tentative deal to dismiss domestic assault charges

Manziel was charged with misdemeanor assault for an incident that occurred in January, but the charges could be dismissed soon.

Johnny Manziel tentatively reached a deal with prosecutors Thursday that will have his misdemeanor assault case dismissed, according to the Associated Press.

A hearing for Manziel was scheduled for Thursday, but postponed until Dec. 1, according to Rebecca Lopez of WFAA in Dallas, who said the judge ordered all parties must be present on that day.

Word of a plea deal first leaked in late June when Bob Hinton, an associate defense attorney for Manziel, accidentally sent a text to the Associated Press that appeared to indicate he was worried about his client’s ability to stay clean if an agreement in the case was reached. A spokesman for Manziel denied that his legal team was seeking a plea deal, and Hinton later withdrew from the case.

The incident started in Manziel's Dallas hotel room early in the morning on Jan. 30. His ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, told law enforcement she tried to leave, but Manziel forced her into his car. Crowley's affidavit says Manziel struck her in the left ear when she attempted to jump out of the vehicle, which caused her to lose some of her hearing.

In addition to the charges filed against Manziel, a judge signed a protective order in April that states he must stay away from Crowley for two years.

It was a tumultuous offseason for the former Cleveland Browns quarterback, who remains a free agent after the Browns released him on March 11. Manziel was frequently spotted partying in Las Vegas amidst public warnings from his family and associates. Manziel's father said in February he fears his son won't see his 24th birthday, and Drew Rosenhaus, Manziel's second agent since the 2015 season, dumped him because he refuses to seek treatment.

Manziel’s father told ESPN his son was a “druggie” earlier this summer and said he hopes his son goes to jail.
