Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers are still searching for answers, even as they both string together decent performances on the field. Kaepernick has thrown for 608 yards and three touchdowns over the past two games, but the 49ers have come out on the losing end of both of them — along with the previous six games.
Patriots vs. 49ers live stream: How to watch Week 11 matchup online
Colin Kaepernick wants to win, even if the 49ers are probably more competing for a top draft pick than anything else.
On Sunday, they will face the New England Patriots, and the 49ers have little hope of getting back in the win column. However, for Kaepernick, every game from here on out is among the most important of his career. He'll try to do some damage to the Patriots defense on Sunday afternoon, with kickoff set for 4:25 p.m. ET. It will be broadcast on CBS, with a live stream online via Sunday Ticket Online.
The 49ers were edged by the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10 after a last-minute field goal put the 49ers on the losing end of the 23-20 game. They are 1-8 on the season now, and their primary competition is made up of the other bad teams in the league in the running for the top draft pick.
But there are more stakes than that. Chip Kelly wants his team to win, and Kaepernick is fighting for his job going forward. It’s unclear if there’s a future in which the 49ers stick with him at the quarterback position, but if he’s not trying to secure a job with the 49ers, he could be auditioning for other teams. Both Kaepernick and the 49ers face their stiffest test yet when Tom Brady and the Patriots come to town.
New England is coming off a close, disappointing loss of its own, but the Patriots are also 7-2 on the season. Their loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday should have them eager to go out and destroy whoever happens to be in front of them, and in this case the matchup has all the makings of a squash match.
The Patriots had four opportunities to get the ball into the end zone from a goal-line formation against the Seahawks, trailing by seven points. But they failed all four times and lost, 31-24.
Brady also threw his first interception of the season in the game, while scoring zero touchdowns. It was, by far, his worst performance of the year. So far this season he’s been nothing short of excellent, with 12 touchdowns against the one interception. This week, adding to his already high touchdown count should be easy for Brady, as the 49ers have the worst scoring defense in the league.
The 49ers allow 31.4 points per game and the Patriots average 26.8 points per game, so it could be a big day for Brady and company.
The New England defense, on the other hand, allows just 18.1 points per game, good for sixth overall in the league. So it will be tougher for Kaepernick and the 49ers offense to get things going, even at home.
