Rex Ryan’s seat is so hot the Bills could fire him this week

Bills coach Rex Ryan may not have a job after Week 14, if recent reports are accurate. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora broke the news Sunday that Ryan had lost favor with Buffalo ownership and is unlikely to return for a third year in New York.

“I’d say I’m 95 percent sure Rex is gone by the end of the season,” one team source told La Canfora. “He could be out as soon as Monday.”

If Ryan is fired, offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn is expected to take over as interim head coach.

The report also suggested starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor could be done with the Bills as well. Taylor has taken a step back this fall after a breakout 2015 campaign, throwing for only 11 touchdowns through 12 games. The fifth-year quarterback would earn $31 million in guaranteed money if he remains on the franchise’s roster beyond March 11.

Taylor had a solid, 228-yard, two touchdown performance against the Steelers in Week 14, but it wasn’t enough to guide Buffalo to a home victory. The Bills fell to 6-7 with the loss.

Ryan refused to address rumors during his post-game press conference.

”I got no comment,” he told reporters. “I don’t know anything about that.”

Ryan landed on the hot seat after an 0-2 start to 2016, but firing offensive coordinator Greg Roman and replacing him with Lynn seemed to get the Bills back on track. Buffalo won four straight games, including a 16-0 shutout of archrival New England, to emerge as an unlikely contender in the AFC East.

That status wouldn’t last. The Bills lost three straight to plunge back under .500 and entered Week 14 at 6-6 — four games behind the Patriots in the division. Barring a furious turnaround, the franchise will miss the postseason for the 17th straight season.

Ryan’s 14-14 record makes him the most successful coach in Buffalo since Wade Phillips roamed the sideline from 2001 to 2003. Prior to heading upstate, he spent six seasons with the New York Jets. He led the team to back-to-back AFC Championship Game appearances in his first two seasons then failed to return to the playoffs in his final four, leading to his ouster.
