Before the game
The Patriots, locked in fierce competition with the Raiders for the top spot in the AFC, need a win to keep their home-field advantage hopes kicking. The Ravens, locked in fierce competition with the Steelers for the top spot in the AFC North, need a win to keep their playoff hopes churning.
So one team is going to leave Gillette Stadium on Monday night in need of some re-calibration.
At 10-2, New England has risen to the top of the conference, but the Patriots are missing several key pieces from the start of the season. Pro Bowlers Rob Gronkowski (injury) and Jamie Collins (trade) won’t take the field for them again this season, and other key weapons like Danny Amendola and Martellus Bennett are either out or hobbled due to injury concerns of their own.
That leaves Tom Brady, LeGarrette Blount, and Julian Edelman to do most of the damage for the New England offense. The trio has been solid in the team’s recent three-game winning streak, but those victories came against the 49ers, Jets, and Rams — three teams with a combined 8-28 record before Week 14. A 7-5 Baltimore team will provide a much tougher test.
The Ravens are in search of a second straight legitimizing win after shredding Miami’s six-game winning streak last Sunday. Baltimore came into that affair with only one victory against a team with a winning record this fall. If the Ravens leave Foxborough triumphant, they’ll have tripled that number in just two weeks time.
Joe Flacco turned up and gave the Dolphins a beating so severe it looked like something out of the Patriots’ 2007 playbook. The veteran passer needed only 28 minutes to throw four touchdowns en route to a 38-6 rout that kept the Ravens atop the AFC North. With the Steelers lurking — and a Week 16 matchup between the two all but certain to have a major impact on the division race — he’ll need to have another MVP-caliber performance to keep his team rolling toward the playoffs.
