A sprained foot will keep Denver Broncos starting quarterback Trevor Siemian from playing the team’s Week 13 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Rookie Paxton Lynch will likely start in his place, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The rookie quarterback will make his second career start in Week 13.

Siemian missed the team’s midweek practices, turning reps over to the 2016 first-round draft pick. On Friday, Siemian was still not at practice, and was ruled out. Lynch is 0-1 as a starter after leading the Broncos to a 23-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons back in October. He’s appeared in two games this fall and has looked every bit a rookie quarterback, throwing for only two touchdowns and an interception while fumbling twice.
Siemian stepped in as the team’s starter this fall after it lost Brock Osweiler in free agency and Peyton Manning to retirement. He’s struggled to guide a Denver offense that’s fallen significantly behind one of the league’s toughest defenses. The Broncos rank 22nd in the NFL in passing offense and 27th in red zone touchdown percentage.
Lynch will be a step down from the team’s normal starter, though not by much if their 2016 stats are any indication.

Lynch will also have the benefit of playing against a lackluster Jacksonville secondary Sunday. The Jaguars have allowed opposing passers to post a 94.2 quarterback rating this fall. If Lynch just lives up to that standard, he’ll walk off the field looking more like Andrew Luck than a rookie QB making his second-ever start.
